Local Innovator HSG UK, finalist in Cummins national search for sustainable Innovations

A local innovator with a brilliant solution for saving water is a finalist of the Cummins Environmental Gateway.

HSG UK submitted their ingenious idea after Cummins, the largest independent maker of diesel engines and related products in the world, called on innovators of all sizes to come forward with sustainable innovations to help Cummins achieve their Environmental targets in the UK.

The Cummins Environmental Gateway, launched in partnership with Marcela Navarro, CEO of Business Cubed (formerly responsible for the successful launch and deployment of the RBS Innovation Gateway), is looking for green and innovative suppliers to positively impact Cummins 2020 Environmental targets whilst promoting supplier inclusion.

The project team, led by Denis Ford, Corporate Indirect Purchasing Leader EMEA, NE/SE Asia & South Pacific at Cummins, is delighted with the quality of the finalists. “We have been very impressed with the quality of the innovations received and even more with the potential for environmental impact and savings. HSG UK should be very proud to be a finalist in the Cummins Environmental Gateway”.

HSG UK was launched in 2007 and as designers and manufactures of the Ureco urinal sleeve system, have become a market leader in washroom water conservation. The principle product is the Ureco urinal sleeve, which works in conjunction with the Uretech water management system reduces water consumption by up to 96%.

Selena Tombs, Sales & Marketing Director explains, “We are delighted to be a finalist in the Cummins Environmental Gateway, it is a fantastic opportunity for innovators to demonstrate the viability of their products and prove their worth. The Gateway provides a real opportunity to work with Cummins in helping to reduce water consumption across their estate.

The Ureco Water Management System will provide instant benefits, as once installed the system has been designed to reduce the running costs of a typical urinal, whilst improving the efficiency, aesthetics, and the overall washroom environment. Using the latest in enzyme and urinal sleeve technology – in partnership with our innovative Uretech Water Manager – the Ureco instantly reduces water usage, eradicates urinal smells, crystallised uric salt blockages and urine stained traps making the Ureco essential for every urinal.”

HSG UK was one of over 100 companies from across the globe that submitted an innovation to the Cummins Environmental Gateway when Cummins UK launched the programme back in August 2016.

Their idea will be presented on March 2, to a high calibre panel on formed by, among other:

-        Antonio Leitao (Vice President – Europe ABO)
-        Richard Keane (Global Operations FE Director)
-        Mark Dhennin (Director Energy & Environment)
-        Denis Ford (International Sourcing Leader, EMEA, NE/SE Asia & South
Pacific)
-        Professor Steve Evans – Director of Research and Industrial Sustainability:
Cambridge University
-       Geoff Burnand – CEO: Investing For Good

who will decide which innovations will have the opportunity to be implemented, and if successful, scaled up, on Cummins sites in the UK.

Selena Tombs notes “Projects like the Cummins Environmental Gateway provide an excellent opportunity for us to gain more exposure nationally so that we can demonstrate the benefits of our products first hand, accelerating our market growth.

Finalists like HSG UK, if successful, will have the opportunity to test their innovations in Cummins sites in the UK.

HSG Sponsor Cyclist’s ‘One Year Time Trial’

HSG are proud sponsors of Steven Abraham’s ‘One Year Time Trial’

Steven Abraham is attempting to cycle more than 75,065 miles in 2015 and has spent several years preparing for this attempt on Tommy Godwin’s record set in 1939.

He has to average over 205 miles a day, every day, for a year.
Steve’s attempt starts on the 1st of January 2015.

Steve has a huge amount of experience in riding long-distances and pushing himself to find his limits. He has many trophies from Audax UK and has competed many times in 24hr time trials with respectable results.

The UMCA (Ultra-Marathon Cycling Association) has now agreed to act as validating body for this attempt.

Steve is an advocate of sustainability and has never learned to drive. Instead, he prefers to travel primarily by bicycle and likes the idea of saving, not wasting resource such as food and water. HSG admire this ethos and as a water saving company, whole-heartedly offer our support and best wishes to Steve on his journey.

Steve needs volunteers to help with routes, accommodation and maintenance. You can volunteer by going to his website. Steve also needs finance. This will be an expensive undertaking just in terms of equipment. He also has to finance all his food and living expenses during a year away from work. You can donate via his website also.

Further information is being added to his website regularly so please visit:

RBS Innovation Gateway Final

RBS Innovation Gateway Final: Mark Forester and Simon Rice of HSG with Chris Sullivan and Marcela Navarro of RBS

“A DERBY firm which developed an innovative water-saving system is feeling flushed with success after the product won a national competition.

Earlier this year, Pride Park-based HSG UK put its Ureco Water Management System forward for the Royal Bank of Scotland’s Innovation Gateway Competition.

It called on businesses to put forward eco-friendly inventions that could be installed at the bank’s UK estate of 2,500 buildings.

The competition had three aims – to help RBS save more energy, water and create less waste, to nurture new inventions and to help firms take their ideas to market.

The Ureco system, which is installed in urinals, uses less water than other products on the market.

HSG UK, which is based in Victoria Way, was among 72 companies whose products were shortlisted to be considered by a panel of independent experts put together by RBS.

HSG made the final and was among 26 companies who presented their ideas.

The firm has now been selected as one of the 10 winners – and its products will now be given a trial across the RBS estate.

Mark Forester, UK business development manager at HSG UK, said: “For a local small-to-medium sized business like ourselves this is a tremendous achievement.

“The Ureco Water Management System is a fully tried and tested product, which has been designed to reduce the running costs of a typical urinal, while improving the efficiency, aesthetics and overall washroom environment.

“Our installation teams retro-fit the Ureco in urinals across the length and breadth of the country.

“Whether a company or organisation has just a couple of urinals or hundreds, once our products are installed, financial savings will be made immediately.

“The RBS Innovation Gateway is a fantastic opportunity for businesses to demonstrate the viability of their products and prove their worth.

“Having a possible contract with such a huge organisation and household name like RBS will add even more credibility to our product.

“We are hopeful that the exposure can also enable us to reach potential clients that previously have proven difficult to access.”

Marcela Navarro from RBS, who is leading the Innovation Gateway initiative, said: “Everyone connected with the RBS Innovation Gateway has been incredibly impressed by the innovators’ creativity and dedication to resource efficiency.”

HSG Celebrates World Toilet Day

World Toilet Day

HSG employees celebrate World Toilet Day

Employees at HSG are talking toilets this World Toilet Day and taking action to help transform the lives of some of the world’s poorest people. Staff will support international charity WaterAid by promoting awareness of this cause on 19 November.

It’s easy to take our toilets for granted but there are 2.5 billion people worldwide living without this basic human right, that’s one in three of the world’s population, impacting on their health, education and economic prosperity.

At HSG, we will be supporting WaterAid this World Toilet Day to help raise awareness of this global crisis.

Barbara Frost, Chief Executive for WaterAid, said: “Can you imagine life without a toilet? Sadly across the world, 1400 children die every day from diarrhoeal diseases caused by a lack of clean water and inadequate sanitation.  And it’s not just about the unhygienic conditions; without a private toilet women and girls are vulnerable to violence, intimidation and indignity.

“Thank you to everyone who is taking action this World Toilet Day – you are making a huge difference to some of the world’s poorest people.”

World Toilet Day takes place every year on 19 November, and since 2013 has been recognised by the United Nations as an official day, demonstrating the importance of sanitation in overcoming poverty.

 Did you know…

  • Around 1,400 children die every day from diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation.
  • 748 million people in the world live without safe water. This is roughly one in ten of the world’s population.
  • 2.5 billion people live without sanitation; this is one in three of the world’s population.
  • For every £1 invested in water and sanitation, an average of £4 is returned in increased productivity.
  • Just £15 can enable one person to access a lasting supply of safe, clean water.
  • Last year WaterAid helped 2.9 million people access improved toilets.

About WaterAid

WaterAid’s vision is of a world where everyone has access to safe water and sanitation.  The international organisation works in 26 countries across Africa, Asia and the Pacific region to transform lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in some of the world’s poorest communities.  Since 1981, WaterAid has reached 21 million people with safe water and, since 2004,18 million people with sanitation.

The RBS Innovation Gateway, which is led by Marcela Navarro, Head of Customer Innovation at RBS, has three aims; to help RBS save more energy, water and waste, to nurture new, brilliant innovations and to help local inventors take their ideas to market.

Mark Forester, UK Business Development Manager at HSG UK, explains:

“The Ureco Water Management System is a fully tried and tested product which has been designed to reduce the running costs of a typical urinal, whilst improving the efficiency, aesthetics and overall washroom environment. Using the latest in enzyme and urinal sleeve technology, in partnership with our innovative Uretech Water Manager – the Ureco instantly reduces water usage, eradicates urinal malodours, removes crystallised uric salt blockages and urine stained traps, making the Ureco a must for every urinal.”

HSG UK based on Pride Park in Derby, are specialists in washroom water conservation. Mark, of HSG UK, continues:  “Our installation teams retro-fit The Ureco Water Management System in urinals across the length and breadth of the country. Whether a company or organisation has just a couple of urinals or hundreds, once our products are installed, financial savings will be made immediately. Our clients also have the knowledge that they are reducing their impact on the environment and helping to protect our most valuable resource.

HSG UK was one of over 140 companies from across the UK who submitted an idea to the RBS Innovation Gateway when the bank launched the project in March this year.

Their idea went before an independent panel of experts put together by RBS, including academics from Cambridge University and business leaders from major companies such as Carillion, who assessed each idea and decided which ones had made it onto the shortlist.

“As a company we are both proud and elated to have been shortlisted by the panellists. RBS is a well-respected organisation which has the potential to bring our products to a new market. We have confidence in the benefits of our products so it is advantageous to have the backing of a major corporation like RBS and we would appreciate any endorsement of our services as a result of this process.

We have enjoyed the whole experience thus far, from meeting the RBS Team to attending the invaluable   Workshops RBS have provided. The innovation Gateway is a fantastic opportunity for SMEs to demonstrate the viability of their products and prove their worth. We are constantly building our brand reputation and enabling clients to improve washrooms and save water. With the backing of RBS and The Gateway, we are hopeful that the exposure can also enable us to reach potential clients that previously have proven difficult to access.

If successful, the next step for market ready ideas will be a trial on the RBS estate, including buildings and branches. All successful concepts will receive a grant to develop their ideas further.

“Our ‘Ureco Water Management System’ stands out for several notable reasons. The Ureco itself is pH neutral and biodegradable so this means that there is no detrimental effect to the environment through waste generation. We pride ourselves on our environmental credentials which are of huge importance to us.

The Ureco has an integrated 100% odour lock preventing unpleasant malodours entering the washrooms. Once installed the urinal system is then set to flush between two and four times per day saving many thousands of litres of fresh potable water.  The Ureco contains billions of friendly bacteria which when released into pipework, removes build-up of uric salts and lime scale, creating further savings on potentially high maintenance costs.

RBS has a large number of sites where we can demonstrate the many benefits The Ureco Water Management System can offer. Results from our installations are fully measurable. With a relatively untapped market, it is our hope that this shortlisting will enable us to gain new clients and show them the huge monitory savings which can be achieved, at the same time helping the UK to become more water efficient”.

The shortlisted companies like HSG UK will now receive a huge range of support from RBS including:

  • Expertise to help accelerate their innovation to market
  • Practical support and insights from the RBS Innovation Panel
  • Access to the RBS Property Team and online events
  • Connecting and collaborating with other leading innovators.

The RBS Innovation Gateway is a live project, so innovators who have missed the first round can apply now to enter round two.
