Lancaster University
Water consumption and an improved washroom environment contributes to Green Lancaster credentials.
Lancaster University is using nearly 19 million litres less water a year equating to £46,000 savings in annual bills since joining forces with HSG UK as part of the University’s commitment to sustainability and improving the customer experience.
HSG UK has installed the Ureco system in male washrooms in communal areas and social spaces across the extensive university campus.
The Challenge
Lancaster University has been named University of the Year by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018. It has also taken the top spot for Best Campus University and Best University in the North West.
With over 14,500 students and 2,500 employees within the Bailrigg campus that is now almost a small town in its own right.
Under the initiative Green Lancaster - a collaborative initiative run by Lancaster University and Lancaster University Students’ Union (LUSU) – the University’s technical compliance and facilities team started investigating ways to reduce water consumption.
The design and age of the water systems and the number of users led to high volumes of water being consumed and recurring problems with blocked urinals leading to complaints of ‘smelly’ toilets.
Lancaster University were approached by HSG UK with information about the Ureco system that could save water and reduce costs.
Our Approach
There was some scepticism amongst the department about waterless urinal sleeves available on the market – fearing that a reduction in water consumption would lead to increased odours.
Following a presentation and survey by HSG UK, the team were sold on the savings that would be accrued – coupled with the improvements made to the washroom experience and installation began.
The Result
Lancaster University’s Mechanical Engineer Mark Woodhouse is a member of the Technical Compliance and Facilities team.
He said: “Despite pre-conceived concerns over previous systems used, the installation of the Ureco system by HSG UK has proven to be a worthwhile asset in terms of utility and financial savings.
“This is part of the university’s facilities department’s drive to ensure the sustainable development of the university in the short, medium and longer terms.
“The installation was completed with minimal disruption and the training session on how to maintain the Ureco was also well received and appreciated by the facilities cleaning staff.
“The savings speak for themselves and there is also positive feedback from the cleaning teams about the improved washroom experience.”
“HSG continues to provide Lancaster University a valuable services whose support staff and engineers are both knowledgeable and approachable.”
