The Challenge
Motorpoint is a nationwide omnichannel, soon-to-be 20-branch strong retail network that has been operating for over 20 years. It is the UK’s market leader in providing cars under 4 years old with fewer than 30,000 miles.
Motorpoint is always looking for ways to improve its eco credentials and customer experience, and the sustainability manager saw the potential to achieve this by partnering with HSG.
Our Approach
We initially site-surveyed the Sheffield and Derby branches. Our findings showed that their urinals operated on a standard fill and flush system, which usually flush in 15-minute intervals, adding up to a massive 96 flushes per day.
The Ureco system reduces flushes to just 4 per day, potentially saving over 300,000 litres of water per year, per cistern. Furthermore, we discovered that urinal blockages were not unusual at Motorpoint’s sites, which could be eradicated by Ureco’s patented design.
Once these findings were at the attention of area managers, we worked closely with them to achieve a rapid installation to start saving water as soon as possible.
The Result
The initial success triggered a rollout across the entire group, with 76 Urecos and 46 Uretech water managers now installed across Motorpoint’s sites.
This has facilitated an annual reduction of 8.7 million litres of water, enough to wash over 85,000 cars, which equates to a massive annual utility bill reduction of £21,760. Furthermore, annual CO2 emissions have been reduced by 9.2 tonnes, which is the same as driving a petrol-powered car for 30,000 miles.
Alexander Charles-Roe, Sustainability Manager at Motorpoint, has said:
"We knew our washrooms were using lots of water, and Ureco looked to be an excellent system to reduce our water consumption.
"After the site survey, we were surprised to hear about the savings to be had. It has been a year since the Ureco was installed, and we are happy to say that it is living up to its promise.
"Furthermore, issues with blockages and odours in the washroom have been eradicated, which has undoubtedly improved the experience of our customers and staff alike."
