HSG Supports Toyota to be a Driving Force for Sustainability
Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK’s site in Burnaston is a highly advanced hybrid vehicle production facility and has continuously been ahead of the curve, particularly in terms of sustainability.
The site hosts a vast solar array, installed in 2011, which produces enough energy to produce 7,000 cars a year. Furthermore, the site is a leader plant for sustainability globally, known for its level of biodiversity as well as key initiatives in energy, water and waste with no waste being sent to landfill or incinerated.
Toyota has further advanced this rigorous commitment to reducing its environmental impact by teaming up with washroom water conservation specialists HSG.
The Challenge
Toyota was looking at upgrading its welfare facilities and in particular looking at how excessive water usage due to over-flushing from the cisterns could be avoided.
Toyota’s team quickly recognised these issues and turned to the established on-site facilities management team, Mitie, for a solution.
Our Approach
Having successfully worked with HSG before, Mitie recommended our Ureco System as a solution. The Ureco System comprises of a urinal sleeve and water manager, which work in conjunction to reduce water consumption, eliminate odours, and keep pipework clear.
Following an exploratory meeting with representatives of Toyota and Mitie Group, HSG carried out a site survey to ascertain both the economic and environmental savings that could be achieved by adopting the Ureco system.
A trial was implemented in July 2021 with 17 Ureco and 14 Uretech water management systems installed to validate the efficacy of the systems and savings. The success of the trial led to a full rollout in April 2022 and a total of 85 Ureco units and 60 Uretech water management systems have now been installed across the site.
The Results
Not only did this improve the welfare facilities, but the site is saving millions of litres of water, thousands in utility bills, and is experiencing reduced CO2 emissions too.
Mitie Group Technical Services Account Director, Christopher Walker, has said:
“The environmental savings are substantial and the cost benefits of using less water and reduced blockages are impressive. We have also had favourable feedback regarding the washroom experience.
“The fact that we could work alongside a fellow Derby-based business, close to the Burnaston manufacturing facility was a further positive.”
